Researchers at the Ziamen University elucidate the possiblemechanisms underlying common GI disorders which include a number of substances, notably proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), substance P, and neurotensin. These biomolecules play avital role in regulating gastric motility, preserving the intestinalepithelial barrier, inhibiting intestinal inflammation, and protectinggastric mucosa. Acupuncture balances the levels of these biomarkersby either stimulating or suppressing the expression of PCNA,substance P, and neurotensin that encourages gastrointestinalmucosal epithelial growth, reduces gastric acid excretion andpromotes healthy digestive motility [2]. The therapeutic effectsof acupuncture may also result from its ability to regulate theneuroendrocrine immune system and activate the cholinergic antiinflammatory-dependent pathway, which aids in the preservationof intestinal barrier integrity and optimizes organ function [3].

The most common acupuncture points used to treat symptomsassociated with digestive disorders include those of the stomach(Figure 2) and large intestine (Figure 3). These points are generallytreated in combination with other points and/or in conjunction withmoxibustion and herbs. The exact treatment plan will depend on thespecific diagnosis of each patient, based on diagnostic procedures(i.e. tongue, appearance, heart rate, and other vital signs). Ratherthan treating primary symptoms, TCM adopts a holistic approachthat addresses the complex patterns of disharmony in the body.
A growing body of literature continues to support the efficacyof acupuncture for alleviating adverse gastrointestinal symptomsassociated with various GI disorders. Current evidence indicates thepotential for acupuncture to treat GI disorders through regulatingintestinal motility, reducing visceral sensitivity, antagonizingintestinal inflammation, and modulating neuroendocrinemechanisms involved in the gut-brain axis. While the evidenceis compelling and consistent, there remains multiple challengesinherent in the study design of acupuncture research that mayimpede the production of truly objective analysis. Clinical studies ofacupuncture are complicated by the fact that applying stimulationto the same acupoint with different manipulation tactics, frequencies of stimulation, and basal body conditions sometimesyield discordant results. In addition, devising a physiologically inertneedling procedure that is indistinguishable from real acupunctureremains a challenge. Therefore, the lack of adequate control groupshas made it difficult to properly interpret the data in acupunctureresearch. Despite these methodological obstacles, the current stateof clinical evidence validating the efficacy of acupuncture remainsan important consideration in the era of increasing consumerinterest in complementary alternative treatment methods. Whilethese studies elucidate the therapeutic benefits of acupunctureunaccompanied by other interventions, it is important to emphasizethat achieving optimal GI health requires a multifactorial approachthat combines healthy dietary and lifestyle modifications thataim to reduce chronic stress, inflammation, and exposure toenvironmental toxins. Nevertheless, acupuncture may provide aneffective adjunct long-term solution for treating gastrointestinaldisorders and its symptomatology.

Hi Mr. DeadmanFirst of all, I would like to say, that I love your acupuncture book. I have heard, that you have a great application for iPhone, and I am wondering if you have any plans of making a version of android?Looking forward to hearing from youSincerelyJael Katz
Dear Peter I am a third year student of acupuncture and find your book very helpful to me and my studies. Most of my classmates have your app on their iphones and it looks brilliant. My dilemma is I own a samsung galaxy phone and would have to change to a more expensive tariff to get an iphone just to access your wonderful app. I am considering doing this but saw that you have reconsidered doing an app for Android and was wondering if you have any idea when this might be available? Also is there a cd maybe I could buy of the app to put on my laptop? I am based in Ireland. Thank you, Denise
Dear Mr Deadman, have there been any further considerations for developing an android app? I am currently an acupuncture student and have your hard cover book, an app for my tablet would be such a great benefit to my studies.
Peter, my wife teaches acupuncture in Toronto and most of her students use your manual as their major reference. Unfortunately she has an Android phone. I applaud your strategy of developing a web app. She could then use a tablet device to access your materials.
Hi Peter. My friend has a kindle and downloaded your app for point location on it and I am smitten. Unfortunately, I only have a laptop and a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy 6 mini) and I would like to have this app on my laptop if possible. I am studying acupuncture at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London and have done a practical stage in Hanoi, Vietnam
